Soave
Soave: The medieval town is dominated by a striking castle that can be seen from the height of Monte Tenda and the surrounding hills. This is the birthplace of one of the world's most famous white wines
Soave Province Verona
Soave lies at the bottom of the Monti Lessini, in the province of Verona.
A name that helps to create the atmosphere that breathes through its soft, green hulls. However the name seems to come from the Svevi (or Suavi), a Nordic population that tried to invade northern Italy in the 7th century.
As well as being an important wine centre, the town is a small architectural jewel of Roman origins. Its strategic position, and moreover its beautiful scenery, Soave was battled for by many noble families.
On the summit of Monte Tenda, there is the striking castle structure, built in 1375 by the Scaligeri. It is characterized by a mast surrounded by three circular walls embattled by the Ghibelline and reinforced by 24 towers.
The historical centre has many elegant buildings. It is worthwhile to visit Palazzo Scaligero, ancient home of the governors of Soave, followed by the 13th century Palazzo dei Conti Sambonifacio, Palazzo dei Conti Cavalli, a refined Venetian construction, and Conti Moscardi, the Palazzo di Giustizia and Palazzo del Capitano.
The religious faith is demonstrated by precious examples of architecture, including the Cathedral (Duomo di S. Lorenzo martire), and the churches of S.Giorgio, Santa Maria di Monte Santo, and the Santuario di Santa Maria della Bassanella (in nearby Borgo Bassano).
Medieval Soave is also famous for the Garganega grapes that grow on its gently sloping hills. These are the grapes that are used to create Soave DOC and DOCG, as well as Recioto di Soave DOCG, some of the most exported and best-known wines abroad. (Foto by Geo8)
