Bassano del Grappa

Bassano del Grappa

Bassano del Grappa: One of the most characteristic places in Veneto, its historical centre is a series of alleyways, small squares, arcades, frescoed houses, and Renaissance palaces. Its name is connected to its celebrated Bridge, Grappa and white asparagus, which is a true gastronomic rarity.

Bassano del Grappa Province Treviso

A small medieval town in the province of Vicenza, economically vibrant, Bassano is located at the foot of the Vicenzan Pre-Alps, close to Massiccio del Grappa.

The monumental symbol is the Ponte degli Alpini, built on the plans of Andrea Palladio, it has been destroyed and rebuilt on many occasions.

In the course of history, the town has been ruled by different aristocratic families. In 1404, it became part of the State from Tera of the Serenissima Republic.

The medieval centre develops around the three squares: Monte Vecchio, Libertà, and Garibaldi, It is characterized by a series of sacred and civil buildings noted for their Venetian style. Valued examples are the Villa Bianchi Michiel, whose Doric portico was built on the plans by Palladio, and the majestic Villa Rezzonico-Borella, whose magnificent interiors are decorated with stucco-work.

In Piazza Libertà there is the Town Hall, whose façade is embellished with a magnificent 18th Century clock, and the Pretorio Palace of 13th Century origins. In the same square, there is the vast complex of the Remondini House, home to the illustrious family of publishers and copperplaters, who developed the most significant printing industry in Italy between 1600 and 1800.

In Piazza Garibaldi, there is the Civic Museum, one of the oldest in Veneto, built in 1828. It houses a precious collection of cultural items, including a fund of over 20,000 prints documenting the Remondini business.
The Sturm Palace hosts the Ceramics Museum, which shows the town's tradition of majolica.

However when one says Bassano, one thinks about the famous Grappa (for which there is actually a museum), the precious ceramics and white asparagus, that exquisite food enjoyed by the Doge, noble patricians, even the Cardinals of the Council of Trento. A noble spout that gains its original flavour and tenderness from the Bassanese earth. (Foto by Filippo Castagna)
